So I think we can all recognise that Pearl’s behaviour in “We Need To Talk” is pretty deplorable. Time and again if we’ve been shown how fusion is a form of intimacy between gems. Ruby and Sapphire are constantly fused as an expression of their feelings for each other. Pearl and Amethyst are very bad at fusing together because of their feelings for each other. So it’s very obvious what Pearl’s intent was when she fused with Rose in front of Greg.
But what about Rose? She understands exactly what fusion represents and how significant it is in Gem culture. But she still agrees do go along with Pearl’s shenanigans. While it’s very easy to say “man, Pearl, you’re so thirsty,” this episode makes it clear that there were reasons for her behaviour. Rose encourages her thirst like this. She doesn’t gives Pearl a clear ‘no’ and enable Pearl to move in and accept that Rose doesn’t like her as much as she likes Rose. Instead, she gives Pearl a ‘yes’, which allows Pearl to continue living in her fantasy where her feelings are reciprocated.
So while Rose’s loving personality, is definitely her greatest strength, it’s allows her weakness. She loves so much and so easily, that it hurts the people around her. It hurts Pearl, as we see in “Sworn to the Sword”, where we see how Pearl has failed utterly to let go of Rose’s memory (no doubt in part because of how Rose leads her on), and it hurts Greg as again we see in “We Need To Talk” where he tries to confess his feelings and she laughs them off as a cute human quirk instead of emotions brought on by her interactions with him.
And none of this is to say that Rose is a bad person. She very clearly is not. But nor is she the flawless paragon that those who remember her try to build her up as. She is just a person, one who makes mistakes despite her best intentions. Which is a really great thing for a kid’s show to discuss. It’s a very real problem. Feelings are very complex and messy, and sometimes trying to be nice hurts people you care about, but just because you’ve hurt some one doesn’t make you bad. It just means you’ve made a mistake, and even the very best of us can make mistakes. Rose’s friends still love her very dearly, and never once suggest that their suffering may have been her fault. It shows how everyone is worthy of love, no matter what.
