Cassie shot up in bed, Ronald haunting her dreams but worse the image of Jenny with her blood on Cassie’s hands. It had been well over a month since he’d gotten away and Jenny eventually released from the hospital. Cassie looked down beside her to see the sleeping form of the other woman, blonde hair splayed over the pillow. She gently reached out for reassurance she was fine and whole. They didn’t make a habit of sleeping over like this and neither had exactly bothered to talk about what it meant, only that Cassie knew there were nights where she felt less restless knowing Jenny was beside her. Although apparently that wasn’t enough to keep all the nightmares at bay.
Cassie tugged up the covers around Jenny and was moving to settle back down in bed when she heard the other’s breathing change and she shifted beside her. “Shh, I’m fine. Go back to sleep,” she whispered the pair of them having been through this routine a time or two before and Cassie knowing Jenny would try and check in as to why she was awake in the dead of night.

I’m down at the hotel bar. Wine? Prentiss should have been trying to sleep but she’d barely gotten to exchange more than a tight smile and a friendly nod with Jenny Hoyt when they’d arrived at the station in Colorado. They had all needed to get down to business. Unsolved case was high on the list of terrible ways to get to finally catch up with a friend from the job, second to only funerals. She supposed they were lucky it was the former and not the latter. Her face brightened genuinely when Jenny spotted her and she stood for a quick hug this time.
“That one is yours,” Emily said pointing to the second glass of red wine. “If I didn’t think this is probably the only way we’d get to catch up, I’d be obligated to say we should stop meeting like this.” Death hanging over their heads. Maybe it was why Prentiss kept most any relationship of substance in her life with some connection to law enforcement. They understood the weight that could aways be there. “I’m sorry we had to ship you out, but it was a relief to see your name on the docket on the jet over. If anyone deserves to be here when we finally catch this son of a bitch...” She took a sip of wine. The cases you didn’t close always stuck with you and Emily had been new to the BAU when she’d met Jenny Hoyt in hopes of tracking down a killer on a multi-state spree. They’d worked well together, but not well enough to catch the guy in the end.
