Flying Fish Exit 4
When possible, I love to support local. Not only does it promote growth in my area, but it also means that I'll keep local farmlands from shrinking since most breweries and wineries support their local farmers. From where I live it's hard to find a more local beer than Flying Fish, which has become a Southern New Jersey favorite for their well priced beers and their support for the local farmlands.
Exit 4 is Flying Fish's take on a Belgian Triple, which the GABF thought high enough of it to give it a gold medal in the American Triple category and the Washington Post has claimed it the winner of their Beer Madness competition in 2011 and may win it this year! and also became the only of the Exit Series beers to become a year round offering. Exit 4 is also the only of their Exit Series, limited big bottle series, to make it to the year round offerings. There's definitely a lot for this beer to live up to with all that said. How does it fare in my tasting? I enjoy this beer very much. Exit 4 is Flying Fish's take on a Triple and while they stay true to the style, they manage to change it up slightly by making this a more citrus forward rendition. This beer has a lot of flavor starting with a semi-bitter grapefruit bite into a floral hops and cloves finish.
This is one of New Jersey's finest offerings and also a great value, a 6 pack of 9.5% beer for $12 is a damn good value! There's some things I would change about this if I want to be picky, but this is a damn fine triple.
