‘Exit Elena’ A Brilliant, Deceptively Simple Portrait of Multi-Generational Malaise

With no place to call home, 19-year-old Elena takes a job as a live-in aide. She finds herself thrust into the middle of a family in crisis: all the things that go on between a father, grandmother, mother, and cat. Eventually, Elena strikes something of a balance though... That is, until the prodigal son returns home. Placing fictional characters alongside real people, 'Exit Elena' is shot through with all the rough edges inherent to family life and home movie form – in short, it’s a dark comedy.

Exit Elena, directed by Nathan Silver, will be screening this week at the 2013 Vancouver International Film Festival. It has previously screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Viennale, BAFICI, IndieLisboa, IFFBoston, Cucalorus, and the Woodstock Film Festival, where it won an Honorable Mention. Hope Dickson Leach from Filmmaker Magazine called it, "An exquisite gem of a movie," Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times described it as "Whisper-quiet and weirdly endearing," and IndieWire hailed it as "Beautifully observed and charming."
