Hypnos was the primordial deity and god or personified spirit (daimon) of sleep. He dwelt in Erebos, the land of eternal darkness beyond the gates of the rising sun, and rose into the sky each night in the train of his mother Nyx (Night). Hypnos was often paired with his twin brother Thanatos (Peaceful Death) – the twos actions almost inseperable – and the Oneiroi (Dreams) were his brothers or sons.
He lived in a cave next to his twin brother, Thanatos, in the underworld, where no light was cast by the sun or the moon; the earth in front of the cave was full of poppies and other sleep-inducing plants. The river Lethe (the river of forgetfulness) flowed through the cave. He was the son of Nyx (night) and Erebus (darkness), while his wife, Pasithea, was one of the youngest of the Graces and was given to him by Hera. Hypnos and Pasithea had a number of sons called the Oneiroi (the dreams), who according to some sources were three in number; Morpheus, Phobetor and Phantasos.
Intangible as the sleep is, Hypnos himself could have been both, but in any case he had enormous power over mortals and immortals – including the God of the Gods, Zeus. Hypnos was also the father of another powerful deity – Morpheus, deity of Dreams.
Hypnos was depicted as a young man with wings on his shoulders or brow. His attributes included either a horn of sleep-inducing opium, a poppy-stem, a branch dripping water from the river Lethe (Forgetfulness), or an inverted torch.
His Roman equivalent was Somnus or Sopor.
Now that that long introduction is out of the way, lets have some explanation shall we? Clearly I did prod you for some ideas but I did also ask a number of other friends for their input and thoughts on some choices. I ended up settling with Hypnos after rereading his wiki who knows how many times and thinking more on his backstory in relation to his personality then just his personality itself. Noctis is a character whom, to the best of my knowledge, seems incredibly powerful but also withdrawn. Everyone has dreams and everyone makes choices, Hypnos is the darkness that follows all of it. While he is often only thought of as “the god of sleep,” he is much more powerful then that and his domain stretches out in many other directions. As stated above, he often gets intertwined with Thanatos who symbolizes death. And yes, I do know how the game ends. He uses aspects like the Lethe to push his domain. Think on dreams, think on sleep. He technically rules over all the aspects involved. Sleep can bring peace or it can bring torment — depends on how its chosen and wielded. Sleep defines your health both mentally and physically. Without it you will perish but with it you can still fall apart. It’s a careful balance that is often seen as prosperous. Anyway….. I hope this is okay? Noctis was harder to puzzle out then I thought and I went back and forth on a lot of gods before settling here.
