The medieval pseudoscience of alchemy regarded this enigmatic metal as the most important of all substances, believing it offered the path by which base metals could be transformed into gold.

With astatine, less is truly more - it is estimated that only about 25 grams of this element exist on the entire planet. Though other elements in its class occur mainly as gases, astatine exists as a solid and might actually exhibit properties more similar to metals. Unwilling to give up its secrets easily, the elusive astatine has ultimately left more questions than it has answered.
