Be honest, did you also think owls were the "smart" bird before today?
Myth: Owls are wise.
Fact: They're just really good at murder in the dark.
Ancient Athens gave owls their entire "wisdom" reputation, mostly because of their forward-facing eyes and that unblinking stare. In reality, an owl's brain is built almost entirely for one job: killing prey it cannot even see coming until it's too late. Silent wings, tube-shaped eyes, ears set at different heights on the skull, every part of an owl exists to make it a better hunter, not a better thinker. Compared to crows or parrots, owls actually score fairly low on general intelligence tests. And no, you cannot legally keep one as a pet in most countries, that "cute Harry Potter owl" fantasy has done real damage to wild populations.
