The Blade Table has now had its last coat of Osmo, the grain of this Monkey Pod is stunning. We are now just waiting for delivery of the bronze inlays. These will be set into that centre of the table and run end to end. Onto hinging the extension elements of the Blade Table. We are using Soss hinges, although they are expensive they are extremely well engineered. As with most concealed hinges, there is zero adjustment so it’s essential that the mortises are accurately positioned. We’ve made a one piece jig that references on one edge of the components and is also reversible, this ensures accurate placement for perfect alignment. More Blade table progress. The oak ladder frame has been glued up and the legs have now been fitted. We have inserted some solid timber into the bottom of the legs. This will not only give a shadow gap and the illusion that the bottom of the legs are just off the floor but will also protect the veneers from damage whenever the table is moved. We’re using M10 Stainless Steel hex bolts with captive nuts which should keep things the legs nicely secured. It’s nice to see the frame and legs together and to get a sense of its dimensions. Lots going through the workshop right now. We are back on the Blade table commission. After a long wait, we’ve now had our second delivery of veneer from Costa Rica and are now ready to start the veneering. We will do the legs first. The substrate is black Valchromat which we’ve have CNC’d. The Monkey Pod veneer has been sawn for us at 2.5mm. We’ve jointed the leaves and pre-glued the edges to create sheets. Lots of progress on the oak frame. All the joinery is done, it’s traditional mortise and tenon. The cross members have had an angle machined to precisely accept the the tapered legs. As each Blade Table is bespoke, we always make up a mock up of the extension element. It’s the trickiest part of the project and this allows us to test and check everything works smoothly. Just made using offcuts of MDF, the mockup is full size in terms of width and thickness and has the concealed hinges installed. We are always keen to try new hardware and did toy with using some newly available adjustable concealed hinges. Despite an initial good impression, they turned out to be not that well engineered and had unacceptable amounts of play. A new commission always involves a trip to the timber yard. It’s such an exciting part of the process, time taken at this stage ensures a good match of grain and colour. We are shopping for oak and of course the boards we want to choose from are at the bottom of this stack! - the boards with the light blue painted ends. The boards chosen are not only incredibly flat but mainly quarter sawn - which is the most stable of cuts of timber, essential as these will be made into the ladder frame of a large extending dining table.
