Thank You Card by Gladie EP Review

I found this three songs extremely easy to listen to while working on other things, because they aren’t ever in-your-face about anything; they say what they have to say in a calm and subdued manner, while maintaining an interesting quality. Gladie are an indie rock outfit from Philadelphia that formed only a few years ago; they have a couple other choice releases from 2018 and earlier this year that I also recommend checking out if you like lo-fi indie rock music with punk and experimental influences.

Experimental ambient rock with lots of variety and dynamic composition; this album provides soundtrack material for an abundance of scenarios in niche indie movies. 

‘Originally formed by Toby Baxter (Guitar/Vocals) and Danny Brooks (Drums/Vocals), and later joined by Jack Daley (Bass), the band honed their expansive sound in London after migrating from the seaside town of Bognor Regis. ‘Preface’ is an example of how MOHIT expertly collage different concepts together to create a whole. The band reveled in the challenge as they endeavored to create something coherent from their otherwise shared “weirdness”, as they call it.

A deeply personal sonic exploration, the nine tracks that make up ‘Preface’ were borne out of improvisation sessions and a shared need to create something that was both outwardly challenging yet intimate and meditative. To MOHIT, this approach to composing music allows them to be pseudo-passengers on the journey, trialing ideas with a determination to let the music itself inform their collective performance.’

Like New by Purr Album Review

Jack and Eliza, a duo that made some fantastically well written indie pop tunes, has evolved into their new persona, Purr. Their debut album, Like New, was produced by the versatile front man of psych rock band Foxygen, Jonathan Rado, who is also involved in several other projects: Weyes Blood, The Lemon Twigs, Whitney, and Father John Misty. With someone as prolific and experimental as Rado on your side, how could this album not turn out amazing? Purr’s sound differs from Jack and Eliza’s in terms of complexity, expanding beyond their tried-and-true formula of a simple musical arrangement backing up their fully fledged lyrics. This project now combines their adroit songwriting with more mature instrumental accompaniment, all under the umbrella of a far more experimental sound.

I’ve been listening to Stars a lot recently. They’re incredibly soothing.
