Graphic Design Week - Foundation Project
Graphic Design Week – Foundation 9- 15th October 2012
Brief
To research and design an experimental publication based on the theme of ‘Light’ (or reverse that to ‘Dark’). The publication is aimed at people that are interested in art, fashion, design, film or the creative arts and should challenge the perception of what a publication is – this includes concepts, writing (or lack of), formats, weight and size. This publication must be a physical piece and not be presented online. The title ‘Light’ (or ‘Dark’) has to be included within the publication – other writing/information can be considered.
Things to consider:
- format. This is an experimental publication, so the size, scale, structure and mix of layouts need to be considered. E.g.: How might images and cutting into pages work together? *NO A4 PUBLICATIONS!
- Differing size of pages within the publication
- Differing paper within the publication – tracing paper, material, cloth, covers.
- The subject matter – how will the theme of light impact onto the publication? Photos of shadows? Photos from a video? Pin-hole camera photos? Drawing from shadows? The Science behind light? How long light takes to travel? Photocopies? Mark-making?
- Text to be included? Will this text be informative?
- Research into existing publications
- Research into the subject matter
- Remember your audience – this publication will be sold in specialist art and design book shops e.g.: ICA, Magma, Alnofini.
- Quality of your product – this is a high end, limited edition publication.
Evidence (to be shown on Monday 15th October)
- Research into existing experimental publication (see under ‘resources’ for starting points – also try and find your own sources) – recorded in your journal
- Primary and secondary research – your own photos, research into the subject matter of light, drawings, light recordings, photocopies.
- Experiments with the subject matter (light/dark)
- Experiments with the format, size and paper – this could be shown in mock ups, tearing, paper sources. All to be photographed and recorded in journal.
- Final publication – ready and presented for Monday afternoon. You must reach this deadline and have all the evidence ready. Be prepared for this and any printing complications
