Explode Into Colors
Orion by Kickball (Highfives And Handshakes, 2007)
I recently got a tattoo on my leg that referenced a piece of artwork from an album of this band. I kind of wish I could translate whatever pain I felt during the process into the words of affection I have for them but I can’t. It’s an ice cream cone with wings playing a guitar. I could describe to you the train ride I took to Portland, Oregon from Irvine, California to see them but I don’t know how to make 36 hours feel like two weeks to you right now. They played this one there. They haven’t played a show since that night but they drop hints every now and then that it wasn’t their last. I’m shifting between different songs by them to give me some sort of inspiration but I can only sit and listen along. A tumbleweed passes between my ears.
I have used this to describe a different vocalist but it goes something like: I wished that there were an endless amount of songs that this person sang in so I could experience every single way their voice could be used.
I listened to this band for a year straight and I hope you can too.

She Shreds Session #2
The She Shreds Sessions are a series of videos where we get a guitarists and a drummer who have never jammed before to get together in a unique setting and play for first time ever. In this session we got local guitar legend, Lauren K. Newman (LKN) and drummer extraordinaire, Lisa Schonberg inside of a print shop to create the magic you witness in this video.

City Of Roses #003:
Stay Calm: "Let Me Clear My Throat"
Earlier this year, a comedian whose name I cannot remember crawled on stage at the Bagdad Theater on the final evening of the Bridgetown Comedy Festival and uttered one frustrated sentence: "Portland, you are killing me." Despite the fact that he was referring to the near lethal amounts of food truck fare, free local microbrews and weed that he had spent close to 72 straight hours ingesting, he could have just as easily been referring to the city's music/art scene.
Here, projects and collaborations are abandoned just as quickly as they started and replaced by newer, more intriguing combinations of musicians. Genres are blurred and all rules haven't just been thrown out the window, they never existed in the first place.
Stay Calm is a project born of this unique artistic climate and despite their short time together as a band, they've established themselves as one of the more exciting attractions in the scene. What started as a small project between Claudia Meza of Explode Into Colors, Zac Pennington of Parenthetical Girls and Joe Kelly of 31Knots has morphed into a fully realized band that still features Meza, but has added regular members Angela McIlvain and Ben Tyler in place of Pennington and Kelly. Still, "Let Me Clear My Throat" features guest vocals from Pennington as he and Meza share lines over the spellbinding drone of a fuzzed-out, one chord guitar. While there's no word of an official release of any kid just yet, I expect to hear a huge amount of noise from this group in due time.
(Watch a blistering live performance of "Take What You Need".)

Explode Into Colors
Explode Into Colors played a free outdoor show for This Is Lost Gospel in NE Portland. Awesomeness.
Easily one of my favourite bands right now. I would have loved to see them live & get a chance to invite them to Kassel this summer. If only...
