I remember in high school, the staff proposed a new courtyard in the middle of the school which was an open area about the size of a classroom. They made it an outdoor area and by "they", I mean "we". Whatever class was near, the staff commissioned the students to fix it as part of the class...mandatory free labor so that they wouldn't have to use the budget. (They apparently got a grant to make it, which obviously some of the supplies cost stuff)
We shoveled out all the dirt and rocks and wheeled it out with a wheelbarrow, leveling the area. We made tiles in art class to build the wall. They made us build this greenhouse. You think I'm joking...
I might even be in this picture, that was literally one of my classes. (I blocked out the faces you could make out in respect for whomever else was there) It wasn't volunteer despite what the school may say.
Pretty sure we built that bench in the corner too but I wasn't there if we did.
I also wanted to mention that the schools website that I got these from kept giving me spam, I had to close out so many "Congrats You Won 5 Million" and "sexy vips in your area" tabs, it's ridiculous, I even had to disable Malwarebytes from blocking it.
There was supposed to be a hydroponic fountain in that greenhouse but I doubt they ever did it. They told all the news sites that they were going to though. That was actually proposed by my teacher (who wasn't exactly up for the idea of working on this area in the first place). He was talking with the main teacher involved who said "maybe we could have a fountain" so he said "Oh yeah, I have a hydroponic pond at home. Those are great." And she took the bait and said "That's a great idea!" She left and he said "I don't have any hydroponics. I was just bullsh*ting, she better not make us install one ourselves, there's no way, digging one of those out is a b*tch."
Now don't get me wrong, there were hired people might've even been staff but I realized how funny it was that us students did a lot of the work for something that probably isn't ever used. Do you really think they're going to let students go outside to lounge? Doubt. The only articles I could find on it were when it was built so there's no proof that it's even acknowledged today but I could've told you that when we built it. Not a big surprise.
