when I see a space thing I search my grandfather's name on Google and find a thing he worked on. this time I found a packet of press releases which contained this transcript of the explorer vii press conference. the pages you see here are rocket scientists explaining a space timer (that was supposed to shut off radio signal after a year but didn't) to the science press corps. I highlighted my grandfather's contribution to this explanation bc it's so very HIM...
"I'm not going to explain how it works because you wouldn't understand. all you need to know is that it's not working right now but if it's ever going to work it will in the next couple of days."
when I was ten or so he handed me a handwritten proof that "one plus one equals one, see if you can find the error." of course I couldn't, I was ten, but he had this sneaky little smile on his face. I'll always remember that.
