It’s possible that McCree hadn’t even thought the words had slipped out. He had been firing away, emptying his clip over and over, until he felt it. The villains were no longer their enemy, they were the heroes, and Jesse was fighting with all his might to take down as many as he can. His shots hit their mark every time, but he is shaking just a bit when the lull hits.
He is fighting to reload when he feels the hand press tight into his. He blinks up at Jami, completely confused until they are away from everyone. He can see Jami, can feel his hands gentle on either side of his head. He wonders for a moment that he is tied to the present why Jami cares so much to leave people he had known longer in closer known danger. But soon enough, his eyes are going dazed and all he hears is shouting. Shouting so close it made his ears ring. He swallows harshly, tearing himself away from hands, needing to get away from the sound. He ends up to a wall on the ground, bringing his knees up. The shouting is still there, yelling and screaming about his slip. His mistake. His stupidity.
He is shaking, but he is trying to reload again. Trying to finish the job before setting aside his weapon. “I did it right.” he whispers more to himself, shifting his hand to shift the hat on his head until it is perched dangerously close to falling.
