Footsteps pounded through the network of cells, echoing over and over down each narrow metal corridor. Jaspers weren’t known--weren’t built-- for their shy, retiring stride, and this one in particular took great pride in each floor-shattering thump.
She paused in front of a cell door. Her lip curled.
“So, this is the little brat who thought she could just fly home?”
Jasper crouched until they were practically nose-to-gemstone-nose. Her teeth flashed green behind the cell partition. Usually she took no notice of Diamond-ordered prisoners; they tended to be small, morose little things, higher ups or defected Rubies, and no fair fun in a fight. But this one....this one was just too rich. A gem from Earth?
A Gem from Earth.
“Surprised you survived so long. Has Rose Quartz’s army really grown so weak? Can’t even destroy something so small?” Her smile grew wider, the usual snarl of a delighted Quartz. But behind the grinning disdain lay something else; something very much like curiosity. Jasper wasn’t usually given over to introspection, but she’d begun to wonder.
“Or does she still think mercy some great prize?”
