Lesson 5 | a new strategy

I have come up with a new strategy for my cello adventure: using a recording device. 

In this lesson, I started to learn staccato and the extended position. 

When playing staccato, each sound or note is played in such a way that they are sharply detached or separated from each others. To achieve this effect, one needs to move the bow a small distance and then stops it on the string. 

Easier said then done.  Lucy demonstrated this several times to me but I still couldn’t get the sudden bow movements correct. Anyway, this would be my homework. 

I moved on to the next exercise on the extended position, playing F sharp and G sharp on the D string. This posed a new challenge for my still not -yet- stretched left hand fingers.  With the first finger on the first note, I needed to reach the third position with my second the finger, so that I could use the little finger for the fourth note G sharp without losing the grip of finger position.  I followed Lucy’s instructions and tried several times to get a feel for the sound of the pitch  and the placement of the fingers. It was very difficult. In fact, it was so difficult that I could only hope that with consistent practice, I would one day be able to build muscle memory to achieve the required state of 'blind and deaf' correctness. Well, will I ever achieve that state? I became less and less confident. 

At the end of that half hour session, a thought suddenly occured to me: with all the new technology that we have in our possession today, why not record Lucy playing the exercises  so I can study it at home again  and practice along with the recording?  In this way I can hear the correct pitch from Lucy and adjust mine when needed. Lucy kindly agreed with my suggestion. 

My new cello strategy worked well for me. During the week, I referred to the recording a lot. With a benchmark for me to practice against,  by Friday, one day before my next lesson, I finally managed to play all three exercises (although still not getting every pitch correctly in tune) from the first note to the last note without making too many squeaky sounds. Now I felt a bit comfortable about facing Lucy tomorrow for lesson 6.
