postcolonial theory
external control & economic exploitation of a native people and their land
from postmodern school of thought- postmodernism is a characterized by a break with modernity and the Enlightenment project…replaced Enlightenment ideas with those of skepticism and distrust
postmodernism originated in the 70′s (with modernism being characteristic of 60's) rejecting elitism, puritanism, and sterility (lacking in stimulating emotional or intellectual quality ex: a sterile work of art)
(postmodernism/poststructuralism/postcolonialism have in common: instability of meaning, distrust of the scientific, & reluctance to grand narratives or sweeping explanation of how society works that are agreed upon by the members of that society)
replaced modernism: 1960′s concerned with utopian image of human life -utopia vs dystopia- utopian society being ideal but not practical (inspired by Marxism) while dystopian art is driven by fear from a leader apart of society (utopian the leader from outside the society) dystopian art usually present a vast, dreary landscape with humans appearing small. while these both are a look into the future, dystopian art is a social commentary on the unfulfilling present state. ex of dystopian art topics include apocalyptic, feminist, and noir.
response to colonialism (land) and imperialism (political & $//power and influence through colonization, military force, ect)
