Things, people, situations… I realised some time ago that throughout my life, I’d been trying to get all my happiness from things, people, and situations. Even though things eventually lose their shine, people often let us down, and situations always change. Our world is full of things, people and situations. Therefore it makes sense to spend some of our time, perhaps even most of our time looking for happiness from external sources. However, if we pin all our hopes of happiness on the outside world (like I did), then we are setting ourselves up for suffering, and in my case, severe suffering. Therefore I spend time developing a source of fulfilment and happiness that has nothing to do with my situation. In theory, I have the tools to find joy in any situation. In reality, I’m at the stage where I can find happiness and peace in many situations that might once have been painful for me. How much happiness should we be banking on from things, people or situations?
