#extracting lines

Hi, I have a question! I was wondering how you could take a lineart that you download from the Internet (that you're allowed to color on), that's not transparent, and make it so you dont draw over the lines, especially if you're just wanting to color it?

on medibang (or firealpaca) if you draw something in pencil and scan it in, is there a way to change the contrast and stuff so it looks more like a proper digital line art?

Try Filter menu, Levels. Grab the little black arrow in the middle of the the top (Input) slider and drag it to the left.

Alternatively, try the Filter menu, Extracting Lines, and do the same thing.

Otherwise, please post an example image for testing.

Can you turn your sketch into lineart, if so then how?

Yes. You can use the filter Extracting Lines (this works well, use the little black triangle sliders to adjust the filter before hitting OK), or you can set a black-on-white sketch to Multiply blend mode to make the white areas transparent.

If you are hand-painting colours underneath, either of these should work well. 

For Bucket fills later (requires absolutely clean transparent areas), I find both the Extracting Lines filter and Multiply blend mode work best with a pure-black and white line image - either in your scanner software settings, converted later (I use IrfanView), or converting to a 1-bit layer in FireAlpaca (not so good with thin lines).

Note that a pure black and white image will often result in some aliasing and loss of line quality. The best results will probably come from scanning in greyscale or colour, using the Extracting Lines filter, and hand-colouring in the layers below.

Hi, do you know how to input scanned line art into Fire Alpaca? I want to digitally color my non-digital sketches but I haven't figure out how to do this... I'd really appreciate tips and tutorials!

I find that this works best if your scanned paper is pure white.

One way to do this is to make your scanned line art pure black and white (1-bit), not greyscale or colour - you can usually set this in your scanning software, or you can change it after the scan (for instance, with IrfanView), or you could potentially use my Threshold “filter brush”, or you could convert the layer to 1-bit within FireAlpaca (although I find the conversion in FireAlpaca tends to preserve less detail).

After converting to pure black and white (1-bit), you can either use the Filter menu, Extracting Lines, or set the line art layer to Multiply, then add your colour in the layer underneath. (If you are using the Bucket fill tool, make sure your line art is closed - that is, no gaps - and that any background layers are turned off.)
