Okay, that's a lie. I can see enough to know what I'm drawing.
Barely.

avelera replied to your post: Okay writers, it’s time we had a talk about eye...
“Is she into me, or did someone just dim the lights” & other reasons not to use pupil dilation as a sign of attraction!
Interestingly! I found a study from 2012 about this and its a more reliable indicator in men, regardless of gender attraction. In lesbians the correlation is still pretty strong, but among straight women, it’s not wholly reliable. So. You know. Check the light levels before taking that as consent dudes. Or maybe you could use your words.
Okay writers, it’s time we had a talk about eye dilation due to attraction.
The average pupil size is 4mm across. That’s on the large end in bright light, and the low end in low light.
The average iris size is 12mm in diameter.
Even the most liberal estimate I could find called it a 55% dilation on seeing something/someone they were attracted to. Most reputable studies call it 45% dilation.
That means that the pupil dilates to 5.8 mm across on seeing something attractive. That’s not going to leave a ‘sliver of blue’
If you take the highest size I could find, which is in the dark, the pupil would be 8mm. However, that is already dilated. So while you could argue that a 45% increase would mean an 11.6mm pupil, and therefore, a sliver of blue, its unlikely to occur, and even if it does, your character cannot see it because it is too dark.
Those mildly terrifying pictures of dilated eyes where it IS a tiny little sliver of blue on the edge? Those come from drug use, specifically hallucinogens or stimulants. Or, they come from an opthamologist dilating your eyes for a checkup with, you guessed it, a stimulant. When your eyes are dilated that wide you aren’t safe to drive, and it’s difficult to see things nearby.
I know we love hyperbole, but please stop making me worry that people need to be hospitalized.
So I’m getting my eyes dilated on Wednesday and I don’t know what to expect… All I know is that I need to have someone drive me there because I’m going to have blurred vision after (when I already have blurred vision, so I’ll be blind pretty much) I guess and it depends on you how long it’ll last.
