Not aging well….

Some of you know that ages ago (about 8 years) I went on an eyeball haul when Soul in a Box had an insane promo of BOGO free. My entire crew was outfitted with new eyes.

Recently the aging of the eyeballs has become quite obvious in person.

The outer layer has begun to crack and yellow badly. This goes for all of the eyes I purchased.

(PLEASE NOTE: I am not complaining, 8 years is a long time! Resin casting formulas have also improved to prevent such yellowing. Soul in a Box still provides excellent quality eyes and I would still recommend them for a lovely pair of peepers.)

But as you can guess from the photos, I’m giving my eye making skills a go and am going to try and make Rynn a new pair of eyes.

So... I strained my hand from drawing too much recently and I probably should keep it unmoving, but...

... i was in the mood for some eye making, so here we go

The bases are super crooked except for those that I used a bought mold for, but inside the eyes they won't be seen.

Some of them also have a bunch of dust particles locked in the resin because i originally just poured some of these for testing purposes, but I thought I could also use them for sculpting practice, so here we are.

We will see what will come of these.

There are still a few spots left, and the fee for materials is $15 a person.

Batchix says: I'll be providing my collection of rhinestones, paints, iridescent powders, glitters, and charms, as well as a variety of eyeblank sizes, so that you can try your hand at making a shoujo style eyes for your doll without breaking the bank on supplies or waiting for your sparkles in the mail.

This class isn't necessarily to teach how to make realistic or perfect eyeballs.  It's intended to be a chance to learn the basics and get the opportunity to make a pair of fun eyes to take home with you.  It's also a chance for you to try it before you commit to buying all the supplies needed.

Warning: UV resin does have a distinct smell. We'll be wearing plastic gloves to protect hands, but the smell isn't so strong a mask is needed.   If you are sensitive to chemical smells please join at your own risk.  The venue is very large and well ventilated, but please take your own comfort and safety into consideration.

Finally some success with making eyes! I ended up trying mod podge gloss instead of the dimensional magic gel, since the dimensional magic kept wrinkling and creasing as it hardened and was a pita to control. And I thought maybe the gloss wasn't gonna work out coz it was staying foggy around the iris for days, but I put the eyes away for awhile and when I checked them a week later the gloss was completely clear! So that's a major step forward! Got two more pairs that I had put the dimensional magic gel on that got wonky that I'm trying to gloss over, so far so good-- the gloss had completely smoothed out the creases, I'm just trying to even out the domes now. Now I can get back to making my own eye bases that actually fit my dolls eye wells.
