It felt akin to reaching the height of the tallest skyscraper and nearly over toppling it’s edge in the way her trembling arms wove their way around his lean yet broad shoulders. They carried such burdens that she could never truly understand their weight, but they were bearing hers in that moment. She did her best not to weep as the sound of her boots scuffing the dust covered floor echoed in the cavernously empty space that held them. It was all she could hear aside from the labored patterns of their mixed breathing.

Her coat is torn in the way that it could not be repaired, marred by broken glass, speckled blood, and her own tears as her hands held tightly against Peter’s back, still fearing if she let go she’d fall all over again. But soon, Gwendolyn could feel the adrenaline ever so slowly start to ebb from her nervous system and she began to realize what could have happened. The echoing of her own fear, shaking in her voice as she had said his name only moments before. But it had felt like an eternity.

‘ --Peter? ‘

And all there had been left was air.

She choked on air, gasping as swelling tears began to bead and break free of her eyelids in quick succession. Death had been calling her name this night, beckoning with spindling hands and ice cold grips. But it had been Peter who had prevented it with his own touch--and the blonde broke as she shook in the embrace of her savior.

“ ----Peter! “

Fear collapsed her lungs as her face buried into the hollow of his throat, gripping him for dear life as she lost all sense of self, sobbing relentlessly in his destroyed suit. She almost died. She almost died. She almost died.
