The answer to this is complex and has a lot to do with the soul creatures and their motivations as well as the complexity of primes.
On the surface, it’s very simple. Eylon didn’t fool himself. Sheverosh told you exactly what happened. If Eylon had died, Masa would never be able to meet his soul price.
That’s it. That’s what happened. But it’s also where things get REALLY complicated. (Because let’s admit it, I never write something with only ONE layer of meaning)
Everyone states Eylon is “The Most Powerful Principality” with power that “equals that of any archangel” right? But why? He’s the principality of FATE. Think about that for a minute. What does that say about the denizens of the planes?
Now think about Sadie. She’s “just a human” in a world of Demons, Devils, and Archangels. What does she think about fate? She treats it the way you and I would. She may pay lip service to it (”it’s fate we met.” or “well isn’t this fate.”) but put any real belief into it? Nope. Not at all. Why? Because Primes believe in Free Will.
NOW we have to add the motivations of Soul Creatures.
A soul creature exacts a price that initially TERRIFIES the person it “belongs to”. In the long run, the price will bring PEACE and contentment to the person. If a soul creature has a price, that price is what the person most desires but feels they are unworthy of/feels they cannot have.
Here’s a big spoiler for you because my mind is on a roll…
Almost all soul creatures have a price.
War’s soul creature demands he find a reason to live or something to live for. He is currently in a cycle of relishing senseless violence and lamenting in the aftermath. What would the death of a Principality of Heaven, let alone the most powerful Principality, cost him?
Death’s soul creature did not always have a price. He gained one after the death of his wife. Death needs to find peace and move on.
Yuki doesn’t really have a soul creature. Rather he has a twin soul.
Sasuke doesn’t have a soul creature, he has a living shadow friend.
Mitsunari has Mochi. It’s not a soul creature. It’s a pet and protector.
Conquest has a soul creature. you’ll find out its price…. and what he does about it.
Mitsuhide has a soul creature. And well, that’s another story.
Shingen, Hideyoshi, Ieyasu, and Kosa have opted not to summon their soul creatures (as of this writing at least. What do they know that the others either do not?)
Orion doesn’t have a soul creature.
Sadie…. well, *grin* let’s just say Sadie is special.
Back to your question:
Why is Eylon alive? Because Kyrion realized the cost of his death and the most powerful ruler in all the planes made it possible.
