Few months back I got a chance to accompany my aunt, who got an invitation to try out the new “Kaizen Concept” at Wagamama located in Ezdan mall, Qatar. I have never been to wagamama before but I have always wanted to try it. And I got try the food there thanks to my aunt.

So here are the dishes I tasted:

UPDATED: Ezdan Mall to hold soft opening on April 15

Ezdan Mall in Gharafa will partially open on Monday, April 15, Ezdan Holding has said. The public is welcome at noon.  

In a statement, Malik Q Awan, the mall’s general manager, said:

The first shops to be opened in the Mall include Tommy Hilfiger, Tally Weijl, Aeropostale, la Vie en Rose, Charles & Keith, Gant, Aldo and Nautica. More than 35% of the shops will be ready to open in April, as we are expecting to have at least 85% of the mall operational by the end of May 2013.

Ezdan Mall, located across the road from Landmark Mall, was originally slated to open in September. But Awan previously told Doha News that progress was pushed back several months after last year’s fatal fire at Villaggio mall.

Safety

To better prepare for emergencies, Awan said Ezdan retooled its original plans by adding several emergency exits, installing glass panes in the ceiling to improve lighting even if the electricity shuts off, and has said it will train stores’ sales representatives and janitors in evacuation procedures. 

In terms of offerings, Ezdan will have a 6,000-square-foot WH Smith bookshop and Tim Hortons, as well as several dozen new outlets that will be open in Qatar for the first time. 

Speaking to the Peninsula on the sidelines of the company's annual meeting, Ezdan Holding CEO Ali Al Obaidli said that two other malls, in Wakra and Wukair, are slated to open in early 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Also yesterday, Ezdan announced plans to build 10 new residential complexes containing some 5,000 residential units, mostly in Wakra, catering to those with limited incomes. 

The news comes amid a crunch of affordable housing in Qatar.

Canadian eatery Tim Hortons, best known for its coffee and donuts, has confirmed that it is opening its first Qatar location at Ezdan mall in Gharafa.

But when exactly that will be remains unknown.

"Unfortunately we do not have a specific date set, but we do expect to open the Ezdan Mall location before the end of the year," the managing director of international operations told Doha News.

The mall, which was initially slated to open last month, will most likely welcome the public late this year or early next year.

Four things that didn't happen in September

Like in many other countries in the region, time can be a flexible notion in Qatar, as evidenced by the latest slew of delays in projects promised to be delivered by September.

Here are some things that were supposed to happen this month, but didn't:

1) The opening of Ezdan mall

Despite an announcement by Ezdan Real Estate Co. to open Ezdan mall in Gharafa (near Landmark) in September 2012, a security guard there recently told Doha News that the opening has been delayed until early next year, at least.

Ezdan said they could not comment on when the mall is opening, but adds that it plans to release a statement soon.

2) The approval of a new media law

Legislation to reframe how media in this country is governed has been languishing for years. But Qatar's Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage had said this summer that a new law to update the one forged in 1979 would be passed after Ramadan.

But the last Advisory Council session of the month, which took place last week, didn't have it on the agenda. 

Not that all journalists are looking forward to the updated law - many have expressed concerns about clauses that prohibit the critiquing of countries "friendly" to Qatar or matters of "higher interest" to the state. 

3) The issuing of new radio licenses

As a knock-on effect of not passing the media law, the Ministry of Culture's plans to issue new radio licenses to private companies after Ramadan have also been set back.

Just who will get the licenses is not yet known. But news and entertainment are expected to be offered on the new stations, whose frequency bands will be provided by the Qatar Media Foundation (QMF) and ictQATAR.

4) The opening session of the Doha Debates  

Qatar's popular debate series has not yet commenced its new season. The debates, which were founded in 2004 and are run by fiery presenter Tim Sebastian, did not schedule a September session and has not yet announced any plans for an October debate. 

Rumors that the debates are being retooled have been circulating for months. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.

Ezdan Real Estate Company issued a news release recently trumpeting its upcoming Ezdan Mall along Al Shamal Road. 

The new mall is meant to have 400,000 square feet of retail space across three floors.

Says Malik Q Awan, the mall's new manager:

It is at the heart of the prime shopping district, surrounded by other shopping mall and a hypermarket, with 50,000 footfalls in the area. And once our Gharafa Mall and adjacent mall open, the footfalls are expected to double."

Another mall is also in the works directly adjacent to Ezdan's, bringing the total number of large retail development in the area to four.
