There was a strong concern for a moment, when it was revealed that Tieren had died, because that’s a big roll to fill. He was a pillar in the story, and significant and unique character, and it’s a bold and difficult move to replace him. But of course Schwab pulled it off and replaced him with the most obvious choice.

But Kell’s first impression had been only that she wasn’t Tieren.

Of course she isn’t!!! Why on earth would Tieren ever want someone like himself to replace him? That’s not balance, that’s just keeping to one type, and that leaves room for a type of tyranny, does it not? No, Tieren could not ever stand to leave the role of Aven Essen to another him. That simply wouldn’t be fair, or simply wouldn’t work.

And just know that the moment he met Ezril, it was an immediate “oh no, this’ll be a piece of work”, which meant that she would be a perfect fit.

No, not standing, leaning, arms crossed and hip cocked to one side. Kell did not think he’d ever seen a priest lean before—

Ezril padded down the steps, and he saw that beneath her white robes, she was barefoot.

The complete opposite, someone who I just know got on Tieren’s nerves all the time. And for her to become Aven Essen through trial by combat? So so fitting for the new head priest.

And her conversations with both Rhy and Kell just really solidified for me that Schwab made the right move and created the perfect character for such a risky and bold move. Especially with the lines:

“Your family must have felt the loss. Their only daughter. Why did you choose to be a priest?”

She tipped her head, as if considering. “Why did you choose to be Antari?”

Because as different as she is from Tieren, that is the exact thing he would say, and they both mean it. Neither of them are saying it for the role, or Ezril to say it to sound like him, but because that’s genuinely their answer. And that is part of what it’d take to be Aven Essen.
