The sewer is a maze and its walls bounce sound in odd directions. Ezreal can’t tell how close his pursuers are and he can’t tell how far he is from his goal. Everything is darkness and damp, the occasional smear of mold on the wall the only thing that differentiates one dark corridor from another. There are no stars for him to navigate by, no light to guide his path. There is darkness, the kind that comes from man tunneling too deep, and there is fatigue tearing at his limbs and sapping energy from his every step. Yuuto’s unconscious, a soft bundle in his arms that he doesn’t let go of even when his foot slips and he goes flying forwards.Strong hands catch him by the arms and pull him back to his feet. His glow is dimmed as much as it can be - he is starmarked, he is startouched, he will always glow - and doesn’t give enough light for him to see properly. All he can make out is a pair of bright eyes, curious and crimson, and a hint of metal somewhere.“...Unless you want to run into a cesspool, you’re going the wrong way,” his rescuer speaks. His voice is low and smooth with the rougher vowels of the Noxian lower-class. “If you want a way out, follow me.”Ezreal looks down at Yuuto, then at the stranger. What can the man lead him to that’s worse than a Noxian dungeon and interrogation? He needs to get Yuuto back up to the light. If he can wake Yuuto long enough for him to return to the glove, then Yuuto at least will be safe.“Thank you,” Ezreal says, and follows the man deeper into the darkness.ii.
He hasn’t heard anything from his pursuers for a while. There’s silence, broken only by the dripping of water and the pounding of his own heart. Every few seconds, Ezreal looks down at Yuuto to make sure the little familiar’s still breathing. His fault. If he hadn’t been so curious, if he hadn’t been caught --A sound like a dozen waterfalls suddenly cuts into his thoughts. The next corner they turn takes them to a massive sink hole where multiple streams pour into a hole as large as a dragon’s skull. It’s even darker here, so Ezreal increases his own glow to compensate.“How far can you blink?” The man asks, uncapping a small, Piltovian torch and shining it towards the center. There’s a rope ladder dangling there, sheened with a faint touch of green that indicates it’s been spelled against rot. “I have to run and then blink at the furtherest part of my arc to reach it. Will it be too far for you?”“...I can make it, but not with my arms full,” Ezreal admits. He can’t risk holding Yuuto with one arm and grabbing for the rope ladder with his other hand. If Yuuto were to fall...“I have a scarf and he looks light. I can tie him to you securely around your chest so you’ll have your arms free. Just dim your glow, you’re ruining my night vision.” There’s the sound of sliding cloth as the man pulls his scarf free but Ezreal doesn’t look at him. He looks down at Yuuto instead, nuzzling his lips to the familiar’s fluff.“No - you take him. Climb up with him to the light. If you let him rest, he’ll come back down to me and we can merge, then I can fly up there.” It’s surely night time by now. There must be starlight up there to recharge and heal his familiar.“Fine.” Though the man’s voice is curt, his hands are gentle as he takes Yuuto from Ezreal. He bundles the familiar up in a red scarf, wrapping the material around the small creature carefully, then ties it against his chest. Ezreal dimly makes out more metal but this is Noxus. Everyone wears weapons here.iii.Ezreal rises, wings spread wide, and hovers silhouetted against the moon for a moment. There’s light enough here to make out his companion’s face but what catches Ezreal’s eye is the bladed cloak and the dragon ensigna on the man’s trousers.“You’re the Blade’s Shadow,” he says as shock sets him down on his feet. He stays merged, taking a little comfort “Why would you help me?”“You Star Guardians kill Void monsters. Void monsters want to eat Valoran. I live in Valoran.” The Blade’s Shadow shrugs and holds out a dully-colored bundle of clothes. “I keep a change of clothes hidden here. Put these on. You’re smaller so you can fit them on over your clothes - and keep the hood pulled up, your hair’s too recognizable.”Enlightened self-interest - makes sense for a Noxian. Ezreal separates from Yuuto, then pulls the clothes on, wrinkling his nose slightly at the beige colors and poor quality fabric. His familiar goes back into his glove with a final fond chirp for Ezreal and a little headbutt at his ankle, then Ezreal looks at the Blade’s Shadow. “Let’s go,” Ezreal says, and the Blade’s Shadow nods.iv."--one of the Star Guardians, really?”“Yeah, there’s a hefty reward for anyone who---”The chatter of the guards warns Ezreal what’s around the corner. He’s about to blink away but instead, he feels the Blade’s Shadow grab his arm and slam him into a wall so hard it knocks the breath out of his lungs. His head smacks back against the stone but before he can complain, the Blade’s Shadow is pressed against him, all lean, hard muscle and intent. For a second, Ezreal gets to see those vivid crimson eyes up close and then the man hisses, ‘Play along’, and the man’s eyes shut just as his mouth descends on Ezreal’s. The kiss is bruisingly hard, far rougher than most people would dare to be, but there’s a certain cold confidence in it that makes Ezreal prickle up and grab the man’s scarf to pull him closer. Star Guardians are not weak, nor do they melt because some Noxian assassin kisses them. He is stardust from the heart of the Big Bang, he is a star going supernova, he is the heat death and rebirth of the universe and the First Star chose him. The Blade’s Shadow pulls away abruptly; Ezreal uses his grip on the man’s scarf to pull him back in for another kiss.v.“If you ever come back to Noxus,” the Blade’s Shadow says, tilting his head towards the city behind them. “Look me up. I’m Talon.”“I know,” Ezreal says cheekily, smirking up at the man. “You’re infamous.”“So are you,” Talon points out and then, after a second, “You aren’t going to tell me your name?”“I can’t. Secret identities have to stay secret.” Something like disappointment flashes across Talon’s eyes, so Ezreal kisses him to console him.(And only to console him. Ezreal needs no consolation that they’re parting.)
