Preview: Richard Turner's Round Trip
As part of a wonderful programme provided by The Spin Off, Richard Turner brings his imaginative, London-based quartet, Round Trip – comprised of some of London’s most exciting young improvisers – to The Spin Off at Santiagos on the 17th March. The gig comes before the release of the band’s self-titled debut album’s release on April 4th on F-IRE records.
Since 2007, Round Trip have been making music together and using the compositions of trumpeter and leader, Richard Turner, as vehicles for exploratory improvisation. Completing the line-up includes Guildhall School of Music and Drama graduate and saxophonist Michael Chillingworth who is currently becoming a well-established musical presence on the UK scene for his roles in his own trio and bassist Calum Gourlay’s Quintet, young bassist Tom Farmer, renowned for his work with the award winning band Empirical, and drummer Josh Morrison who was worked with Stan Sulzmann and Martin Speake.
Richard’s broad influences including eminent jazz icons such as Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy and Lennie Tristano as well as classical influences from J.S Bach, Shostakovich, Debussy and Stravinsky have aided his ability to move fluently between countless styles of music which have seen him appear with such artists as Gary Husband, Mike Gibbs, Steve Swallow and Bill Frisell, give recitals for trumpet and organ at major cathedrals such as York Minster and perform on live broadcasts for BBC television and radio.
Catch some of the British jazz scene’s imaginative and creative musicians, recently reviewed ‘outstanding’ in the Guardian, for what is expected to be a top night.
The Spin Off was founded in 2005 by Leeds College of Music students, Johnny Tomlinson and Tommy Evans, originally to offer gig opportunities to students of LCM but has hosted over 100 gigs of original improvised and progressive jazz in Leeds.
