Hahaha because it is. In inner city neighborhoods, vegetables are more expensive than frozen pre made meals that include meat and dairy. Veganism can be cheap if you live in a wealthy neighborhood (which I do so its easier for me to maintain a vegan diet than it is for vegans in poor neighborhoods) I'm extremely lucky to have such a privileged life that I can maintain a vegan diet. Fresh fruits and veg are double the price in poor neighborhoods as they are in wealthy ones.
i don’t understand how standard vegetables and fruit (not exotic) can be more expensive than meat. both in portugal and in the uk u can buy 1kg of veggies with a fraction of the cost of 1kg of any kind of meat. which seems logical because livestock needs to be bought, fed, and maintained for at least several months. do u really have such low vegetable production in the us? i’m genuinely curious bc in portugal we learn how to plant them in our own backyard
