Created for FMP (course work is doing my head in) but I thought it was worth sharing.

and what she sparked landed before it flew

no one will know the violence it took to become this gentle - unknown

when you’ve experienced the feeling of cold from the depths of my blood

and nails on skin creating canvases for ships to sink

the soft touch and gentleness is a harbour

a call light not by choice but by necessity

because if i touch your mind with a hardened fist, 

my nails will grow and sharpen 

and dig buried in fragility

until the red drains out 

and the sea can no longer wash it away

when i touch her hand or sing her to sleep

i think of him and how when i asked for the warmth to be sustained

he plunged me deeper still, pressing me under until my lungs burned

my mother’s voice faded and hollow in my ears

never once did i feel kindness in my own skin

leaving me with the racket of waves on my back

too light too cry for yet too heavy to escape it

and as i step i am not dragged under

ushering open the doors and heading the tone of the whistle

running forward but not away as the weights still tug on my shins

i choose to flick the switch and turn the key

the blinding light blinks back at the merciful waters
