Snowfall | F2F | Meryna
She needed this. A weekend away from the hustle of city life, a weekend away from her job and her forever ringing phone, she needed time to herself. So she packed a bag, booked a flight and a car and made her way to the lake house up in the mountains which she knew would be empty. Since the accident, she’d done a spectacular job of isolating herself and pushing people away. The holidays had been a brief and hurried affair with the family here at the house but otherwise Meryl had been back to visit only a handful of times. She felt the need to check up on the place since she felt responsible for it but she never stayed more than 24 hours and normally she had someone else with her. The hype about her ‘relationship’ with Rayna had all but fizzled out and she’d buried herself back into work. They spoke now and again to catch up but she didn’t have time for a social life any longer.
This weekend was the first weekend since last summer that she took some time to decompress and take care of herself. She’d unpacked and cleaned the second she got there and when the flurries started falling from the sky, she’d headed into town to stock up on groceries and other necessities. It was now, that she was finally unwinding. There was already a few inches of snow on the ground outside and it only seemed to fall from the sky harder with every passing minute. She should have read the forecast. It was too late to do anything about it now. She knew better than to drive in certain conditions now.
The fire in the living room was crackling as it glowed, a healthy blaze illuminating the room along with a lantern here and there. She was curled up on the couch, a glass of Malbec in hand and a book in her lap. The thick, over sized, cable knit sweater kept her warm as did the thermal leggings and thick bunched up wool socks; blonde waves were worn up in a messy bun and black rimmed glasses sat perched on the bridge of her nose.
Meryl read in peace, occasionally sipping from her glass of wine. She didn’t notice the car that pulled up out front but she did hear the knob of the door turning. Her senses perked up and her heart leapt into her throat. Setting the book and glass aside, she closed slender digits around a heavy silver candle holder from the coffee table and prepped herself for the absolute worst.
When the door opened, hazel eyes narrowed slightly at the intruder only to widen and her grip on the candle holder loosened. “...Ray?” She muttered softly. ”Fucking hell, Rayna-” She sounded exasperated as her heart hammered away in her chest. Rolling her eyes, she fell back onto the couch. “You have got to be kidding me.” She didn’t sound pissed or even bitter maybe a little annoyed but that was nothing Rayna wasn’t used to.
