Polynesians at pride makes me so happy ✨ I could cry tears of joy. Shout out to all the fa'afafines who showed up and showed out for the culture.

Fa'afafine
Fa'afafine as well as the other terms in the “culture exclusive gender” tag are genders that are specific to certain cultures and should not be used by people not of that culture. If you’re not sure you’re able to use this, feel free to send an ask on my ask blog [Link], I have followers that could help you out!

“Fa'afafine is a gender exclusive to Samoan culture. The closest Western equivalent would be a sort of overlap between gay men and trans women, but it is still its own identity. The traditional role of a fa'afafine is to act like a mother, helping with cooking, cleaning, childcare, etc. Though in Samoan culture, there is more of a communal family, instead of a family being limited to two parents and their children. So in essence, fa'afafine would help people with caring for children, cooking, etc. for the whole community!
For more information, I would suggest checking out the Society of Fa'afafine in American Samoa (Also known as S.O.F.I.A). This groups helps promote recognition and respect for fa'afafine, while also encouraging working together with and helping the LGBT+ community in the Samoas and America!”

Color meanings: “For the flag here, we decided to just base it off of the S.O.F.I.A.’s logo. The three bars, dark red then yellow then dark red, and the hibiscus in the middle, all from the logo! Hibiscus is traditional associated with tropical islands like the Samoas, and pink ones in particular with femininity and fa'afafines, so it is fitting.”
