Henry Heerup (November 4, 1907 - 1993) was a Danish artist who worked in a multitude of materials and media, including stone sculptures, trash and objets trouvées installations, lino-cuts, oil painting, posters, garden gnome figurines, etc., etc.
Heerup was trained at the Danish Royal Academy but quickly joined the CoBrA group and did illustration work for journals such as Hvedekorn and Helhesten. He exhibited widely in Denmark and abroad, including three separate occasions at the Venice Bienniale.
His popular art which featured fantastic creatures and goblins has sometimes eclipsed his more avant-garde efforts. This work from 1963 - Fabelhesten - combines the two sides of his art very well.
