Else Alfelt (Sept. 16, 1910 - 1974) was an important, autodidact Danish artist, associated with various movements through her life. She started out as a naturalist painter, but soon went abstract under the influence of Surrealism and the Danish group Linien (The Line) which brought French Surrealism to Denmark in the mid 1930s. During WW II she was part of Asger Jorn’s Helhesten (The Hell-Horse) group, leading into her association with and membership of CoBrA.

She was fascinated with mountain landscapes and increasingly spiritual and even esoteric in her use of colors, shapes and light.

Danish artist Asger Jorn (March 3, 1914 - 1973) was one of the three most important Danish painters in the 20th century. He studied in Paris in the 1930s with Fernand Léger in the summer and at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen in the winter.

He co-founded the seminal European artists’ group CoBrA in 1948. His later work moved from avant-garde to abstract expressionism…

Henry Heerup (Nov. 4, 1907 - 1993) was a Danish artist who worked in a multitude of materials and media, including stone sculptures, trash and objets trouvées installations, lino-cuts, oil painting, posters, garden gnome figurines, etc., etc.

Heerup was trained at the Danish Royal Academy but quickly joined the CoBrA group and did illustration work for journals such as Hvedekorn and Helhesten. He exhibited widely in Denmark (from 1951 with the Decembrists) and abroad, including three separate occasions at the Venice Biennale.

Egill Jacobsen (Dec. 16, 1910 - 1998) was a Danish painter known for his repetitive use of masks in his art. He was a neo-primitivist and a wild expressionist/colorist. Over time he was associated with CoBrA, the Corner group and the Fall Exhibition in Copenhagen (Høstudstillingen).

His popular art which featured fantastic creatures and goblins has sometimes eclipsed his more avant-garde efforts. This work from 1963 - Fabelhesten - combines the two sides of his art very well.

I haven't heard this great album in ages, and when I first did, it was when I very into some of the bands that create its constituent parts, namely Chora, Helhesten, and Motherfucking (if Hunter Gracchus was there, it'd be a real party); it was like being a teenager who's into Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and discovering the existence of Temple of The Dog. The album is just as great as I remember, a bewildering pileup of electric guitars, strings, some reedy horns, drums, and percussion, all recorded modestly but sounding thick and wonderful. The only thing I found a little surprising upon this revisit was the amount of groove-based sections on here; it's not exactly funky, but I honestly don't remember it being as much of a toetapper as it is.
