Decorative Figure on an Ornamental Background

Description

In 1921, Matisse equipped his new studio in Nice with a transformable set, made of overlapping fabric panels and a platform covered with rugs, cushions, screens, and other decorative elements. The "ornamental background" against which the "decorative figure" stands out is integrated into this setting, while the nude figure is draped only in white fabric. The rectilinear forms of the model contrast with the arabesques of the decorative motifs. By creating juxtapositions of rhythms and patterns, Matisse deliberately disrupts our perception, making it difficult to distinguish the figure from the background and the various objects placed around it.

Hand screen printed Animal Bones fabric launches over in my shop tonight! (6pm PST)

The Black, Charcoal, Glow, Copper/Gold on Teal and White on Teal will definitely be printed again. The others are a maybe. I’m still deciding on the final color combination for this design and will be ordering more fabric colors to try out some other variations.

Want yardage? The Animal Bones will be my first design done with a digital printing technique so I’ll be able to offer larger sizes for those interested in pillow cases, dresses, etc. Pre-order for that will be put up once I get my sample in. My other designs will eventually have this option available too.
