Isn’t the mask-changing “magic” a specialty of the Sichuan opera? I didn’t know Japan had the same/similar tradition :O

It started small.
"Just smooth out your blemishes honey, it isn't that big a deal" her mother said behind the camera. With a few breathes, she focused and with ease (like her mother suggested) hid the acne she was getting for the Christmas photo.
-
SInce she was small she could change her face. It started at 2 years old when she liked the cat apparently. Her father told her that their cat Mikey loved her. He was an orange cat fluffy as could be with big green eyes.
The day after they got Mikey, she came home to a cat faced child and ran to her father crying that the cat was evil or something.
Apparently, she changed back and started crying when she saw her parents upset. From then on her parents hid her from the world.
"World news update - Children are being born with strange new odd abilities almost like superpowers. The president has called this a potential terrorist attack on the youth of our country and the children under 5 years of age are being detained for their safety. Quarantine measures are un-"
The TV was off and at the time she could vaguely remember her holding her tight and crying hysterically. She did not understand it but she simply could remember how shaken she was knowing her mother could cry.
-
At such a young age...she was blessed with luck because her mother and father planned how to escape her detainment for a long time. They began saying she was 7 years old, going to the doctors and illegally changing her age behind the scenes since her mother was a nurse.
It worked till she turned 6, then the government came for her.
She was gone for a year before the scientists had decided they couldn't fight the army of parents in the court system any longer. When she was 6 years old, she was released and all she remembered of that time was playing with others her age and never having a problem.
-
The real trouble started in school.
"Up next is Hazel, care to show what you brought to show and tell."
She had forgotten all about it in her bag. Devin, the boy before her, had shown off his cool new toy and she did not like Devin so she had to do something cooler.
She couldn't show off her little stuffed animal like she wanted to. So she decided she would do something different.
"I can do this!" She announced as she breathed in slowly and changed her face easily. Everyone was shocked as Hazel's face was now her teachers.
"Tada! I have one of the cool power things!"
She remembered everyone clapping. Super-powered children were 1 in 1000 and she felt special.
She became popular overnight. Her powers were everything to her and from then on she used them in conversations to mock teachers or tell off mean boys and girls.
She was considered cool.
-
By the age of 14, she was tired of it all.
Hazel didn't care about photos and avoided them like the plague. Everyone was on their phones and would always ask her to change into someone else when she was with them.
"I wanna take a photo with Taylor Swift"
"Oooh can you turn into a guy?"
"Hey, can you turn into Tom Hanks? It's for my wife's birthday."
She was sick of it. Now that she was older she understood why her parents hid this power of hers. It was annoying. Now even the word 'face' got her heckles up.
That was until she met Brian Hockins.
It was a crush she had had when she was younger. To be with a hot guy and have him say romantically that Hazel's face was his favorite. Her friends said it was weird but they didn't understand.
So when Brian, a guy in her science class, said that he liked her hair...it was love at first words.
From then on she was determined to be closer and by the next year they were friends. It was a dream to her. Brian never asked her to change ever. He would always say he wanted her to be there and not some random person.
When she was 16, they were dating. He was showing her off to friends and she would do the same. He loved her from her thin lips to her boring brunette short hair. No ever liked her hair...not like Brian did.
-
Things however change.
"I'm thinking about dying my hair, but I don't know if I want to." she said it out loud remembering the hot girl in her class was with green hair now.
"Why don't you change your hair color now to find out what looks best on you?" Brian said mindlessly while they fiddled on their phones and at the time it sounded logical and easy.
"What do you think would look good on me? Like what should I try first?"
He smiled and laughed, "Babe, you know I would always say brown first right?"
She pushed his arm a little, "c'mon I am being serious here!" She laughed and he finally suggested trying out blonde since she would have to naturally do that first.
Hazel breathes in and out and changes.
There was suddenly more interest from her boyfriend now as he looked at her.
"I never realized it, but I've never seen you use your power." He said reverently. She was kinda shocked since she used it a decent amount, but she rarely used it outside the house.
"Oh yeah, you haven't."
"Try some other colors, but I think blonde looks good."
She smiled at the compliment.
Hazel hated how easy it was to make her happy.
-
"A prank?" She asked worriedly, "I don't know if that is even remotely cool to do Brian."
He shook his head, "Hazel, baby, it's not a prank. It would mean the world if Ariana Grandé came to my little sister's birthday party. Can you imagine how amazing it would be to think you met your celebrity? She's 7 years old Hazel, and my mom is the only one that would be shocked by it. She is cool though with the super kids movement anyway."
Hazel was worried about this, but imagining Brian's little sister (who was adorable) getting excited and happy to see Ariana of all people at her little birthday would be amazing.
"I have never full body changed before though? What if a super fan like your crazy cute sister finds me out? I mean, Riley has magazine interviews Brian!"
"Babe, she buys it for the pictures. She hates reading and if you only get the face you can just take a picture of yourself and write on there that you are happy she is turning 8."
It would make Riley's whole day. She knew that and she also knew Riley was the sweetest little girl ever.
She was able to full body transform and dress up for Rileys party. She felt great, like she was doing something nice with her power.
-
"You know kiddo, I bet you could bring in some business doing charity gigs for superstars, you know, the mean ones that don't like kids or whatever. You'd be rolling in it!" Her dad laughed and she mentally agreed to that.
"But I would be helping hateful millionaires and celebrities get better fame when they don't deserve it." She pointed out and her dad nodded.
"Buuut you'd be taking money from them, so in a way. You are making them pay for someone else, like you, to use their money better, like saving up for a car!" Her mom pointed out.
Hazel smiled and laughed, these two goofball. "Good to know I have a backup job in mind."
-
"Hazel, honey," Brian's mom started at the table and Hazel listened carefully.
"You know how my littlest girl has been bullying someone at your school." She nodded, she knew about Kinsey, Brian's smallest sister was a real piece of work. Almost 7 now.
"Think you could change into my husband and wake her up for school? She's been a grouch and she just doesn't listen to me, but she listened to Oliver more."
It was a request that she didn't want to deny because it sounded funny and was for a good cause.
"Sure"
