Chapterhouse: Dune - Daniel and Marty, Face Dancers???

Chapterhouse: Dune  Date Published: 1985 Author: Frank Herbert Pages 194-195:  “Duncan? What is it? You’re all sweaty.  “I...think it’s something the damned Tleilaxu planted in me. I keep seeing...I think they’re Face Dancers. They...look at me and just now...a whistle. It hurt.”

Summary: What happened here is that Duncan Idaho saw Daniel and Marty who are what appear to be renegade Face Dancers. What’s later revealed in the Dune 7 books (by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson) to be the two Thinking Machines, Erasmus and Omnimus. 

This reveal has spark controversy to where the Dune fans were divided over whether or not Daniel and Marty were indeed Renegade Face Dancers or the Thinking Machines posing as them.

On one, Daniel and Marty ARE indeed Face Dancers. These are rogue Face Dancers who are running amok and causing trouble within the Known Universe. They are the “ENEMY” that the protagonists are up against. Humans vs. Bioengineered “Shape-shifting” chameleon humans. 

On the other hand, the quote above is just showing Duncan’s guess on who he thinks Daniel and Marty are. Just because Duncan thinks they are Face Dancers does not mean they are Face Dancers. Thus, adds evidence that Daniel and Marty are indeed Erasmus and Ominous from the Butlerian Jihad: The Crusade against the Thinking Machines. 

It should be noted thought that on some Dune 7 book review site where a reviewer mentions a quote in the Chapterhouse: Dune where Daniel and Marty references about “their masters” as in their Bene Tleilaxu Masters. This quote shows that Daniel and Marty are indeed face dancers with agency of their own and serving a different faction. This quote in Chapterhouse: Dune gets contradicted by the reveal that Daniel and Marty are Erasmus and Ominous. 

Now, there is a theory that was mentioned before that Daniel and Marty are indeed actual rogue Face Dancers working for Erasmus, Ominous, and the Thinking Machines. However, Daniel and Marty got killed leading Erasmus and Ominous to pose as them. Some reacted feeling that this is some sort of cop-out that Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson has made for Dune 7. Some say that this fits even though it is a theory and nothing actually confirmed by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Chapterhouse: Dune - Meta: Another Quote about Daniel Marty: Face Dancer or Thinking Machine?

Chapterhouse: Dune Date Published: 1985 Author: Frank Herbert Page 459: “Daniel chuckled. “That would’ve been funny. They have such a hard time accept that Face Dancers can be independent of them.”

“I don’t see why. It’s a natural consequence. They gave us the power to absorb the memories and experiences of other people. Gather enough of those and..”

“It’s personas we, take Marty.”

Presented above is the quote that what’s considered as the smoking gun proof that Daniel and Marty are indeed Face Dancers instead of Erasmus and Omnius (Thinking Machine Faction) from the Butlerian Jihad. Whey Marty said, “they gave us the power to absorb the memories and experiences of others,” this does sound like that the Bene Tleilaxu did bio-engineered the Face Dancers, such as Daniel and Marty who later evolved or were created to absorb memories and experiences of other people. 

On the other hand, it can be argued by those who that Daniel and Marty could be Erasmus and Omnius who somehow (through their own cyborg technology) gather this ability from another “Face Dancer” for themselves and use it as part of their plan to take over humanity. However, such argument can be seen as hamfisted as best or in other words, trying to place a square peg in a round hole.

Another theory suggests that Daniel and Marty have always been Face Dancers, but Erasmus and Omnius were simply using them as puppets that when Daniel and Marty are no longer of use, they got killed off. 

If it’s to be my preference as to what happened in the Dune 7 books, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, I would rather stick with Daniel and Marty as renegade Face Dancers who were offered something of great by the returning Thinking Machine faction whether led by Erasmus or Omnius or some human(s) that still embrace Artificial Intelligence technology. Then, later on, Daniel and Marty will be the ones to reveal their “TRUE MASTERS” or let’s say their partners-in-crime (that Daniel and Marty will later “back stab”) to Duncan Idaho (ghola) and his friends for their “interpretation” of the Golden Path, the key to human infinite survival.

Other Notes: In Chapterhouse: Dune (book), Daniel and Marty only appear at least 3 or 4 times, depending on what I remember from reading the book.

Constantly refer to the Faceless Men from Game of Thrones as Face Dancers because you have read the Dune series way too many times.
