sociopath - stayloose, bryce

medusa is an efficient killer. she lives lies like a second skin, compulsively creating other identities, histories, likes, dislikes. of these lies, the one that she tells herself the most (and those she cares about) is that she could ever really care for anyone beyond herself. she has always found it difficult to relate to others, and growing up, relates to them even less. she’s extremely narcissistic and does things only for herself. she requires constant stimulation, engages in multiple sexual relationships and can be impulsive if she’s bored – and she’s bored. a lot.

in this business, the only one she can really trust is herself, and for good reason, too. there are those like sunny and neptune who are only somewhat close, but they’re as close as medusa allows them to be. there are ambitions that she must keep to herself if she wants to keep her job, which means stepping on others to get to a higher position if the situation demands it. she’ll make it on her own if she has to (and god only knows she has to).

medusa doesn’t hold any resentment for anybody, not really, not even her. those who piss her off often die or are better off dead. she doesn’t blame herself for them, of course. it’s all their fault; isn’t that the way everyone wishes they could react to that kind of thing, anyway? there’s nothing wrong with acting on impulse.

here’s the thing that not many people want to admit: stability sucks. it’s boring, and as much as she’s grateful to hydrus for giving her as stable a job as any, there are days and hours where she finds herself trawling the internet with no other goal than to secure a good bargain. it’s the little details of life that seem absolutely colourless compared to her job, and she’d trade it all for another thrill.

this isn’t a job with health benefits. no insurance. if she doesn’t prove herself useful and invaluable, hydrus wouldn’t have any problem eating her alive and burying her when they’re done. she has no doubt about it, but that’s what makes it exciting. it drives her to become the one who decides all these things, and she’ll kill anyone who gets in her way.

what’s a job without showing up in proper attire? the great thing about this is that she can look as expensive as she wants when she needs to be. there’s no one telling her she has to wear the same suit-and-skirt-and-heels every day. there is no uniform other than a lie. she puts on her diamonds and smiles, running her palm down her stomach and checking her outline to see if anyone can tell there’s a knife at her thigh. (they never do.)

jinah will reach heights that her father never could, even if it means burning the ladder itself. her loyalties are questionable. she follows where her ambition leads, and right now, the fastest path to that is hydrus. this is not for the faint of heart. this is for blasphemers and murderers and betrayers. this is for those who can hold on to a wild train; those who get left behind will inevitably be corpses.

it’s a man’s world, but at least they’re useful for something. hydrus has begun to diversify, and for that she is glad. hydrus has a plan, hydrus has ambition, hydrus has greed and focus. sins aren’t all that bad when you’re surrounded by associates with the same nothing-hearts. this is a parade of leather jackets and leather boots, of red-smeared lips on a bar counter, stomping their spirits out in the dance floor.

people like her are born to be sharks. their sense of blood is keen because they’ve been exposed to it. she knows their kind and they know hers because they are one and the same. they have eaten their own souls in the womb before they can truly open their eyes to the truth of the world, and the riot in their souls make them swarm to each other, cannibal and raw, and feral to anything else.

in this world, there is one soul who’s managed to survive her vengeance and her anger. she will not admit it to anyone, but she enjoys these little moments where her heart goes into near-death. la petite mort in the form of a woman finds her just as much as she finds sweetness in tired kisses and bitterness beyond the sheets. it’s a toxic obsession – one that only hurts, and the only one that can feel good. there’s no letting go for either of them now.

jinah can dream. she dreams before this, and what they could’ve done, and what she shouldn’t have done at all. there’s no one to blame but jinah, but still she dares to dream, every bit the greedy sinner. in this dream the sky is pink-and-orange summer, and so is her heart. in this dream, she has escaped the slaughter and the knife, and has traded it for a pen and paper and coffee-kissed mornings. in this dream, love fills the hollow heaviness that has settled at her stomach, reverberating like a storm to the tips of her fingers, lightning and all.

now, jinah tries not to dream often. her days are filled enough with work and work and work, and there’s no use daring to believe that there can be an escape from the runaway train she’s shackled to. she used to ask if she could be saved from this, but the one who was supposed to save her abandoned her 10 years ago. she’s not the crying girl asking to be saved anymore. now she’s the one who hurts people, too.
