David Marcus says that Libra is not affected after the exit of Visa, PayPal, Stripe among others

As many as seven prominent firms (PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, eBay, Mercado Pago, and Booking) have pulled out their association with facebook’s highly talked about crypto project Libra. However, Head of Facebook’s Calibra, David Marcus has cleared the blues by mentioning that this will in no way impact the project.

Marcus further clarified, “One thing that is not well understood is that you don’t need to be a member of the Libra Association to build services and products. So if Visa and Mastercard want to issue cards for Libra wallet at a later stage, they can still do it without being members of the association.”

Marcus also acknowledged the support of these firms and said that he understands the fact that these firms also have a certain responsibility towards their shareholders. 

As per David, the exit of these firms are not due to regulatory reasons. He said that Facebook is “fleshing out all of the regulatory requirements and oversight required for this to operate.” He, however, agreed that the process will not be an easy one and it will take time before Libra can be fully operational. 

Facebook is aspiring to launch Libra publicly by the first half of 2020. It would be interesting to note Libra’s progress amidst global regulatory concerns.
