Mary sent a letter to Arthur a few days ago. She asked him to meet her at their spot just outside of Valentine. A little bit of time had passed since they last saw each other, and at that time, Arthur shared with her a very important secret he had been keeping from her and almost everyone else in his life. She was still processing it, but with time she was understanding. Mary would always love Arthur. He was her best friend since before she could remember.

She arrived a little early, playing with her dress a little as she waited. She hoped he would join her and that they could talk. After a few more minutes, she finally saw him and his horse on his way. She smiled and she pushed off the fence a little. “Hey, stranger,” she said softly as he got closer. She was really glad to see him.

Sadie has never been too great at comfort. she grew up as a single child and didn’t talk much with her mom. whenever Jake would get upset about something, she’d try her hardest to make him feel better but it usually ended with him teasing her for her attempts and making her get flustered. but if she cares about someone, she’s going to try to get them to talk to her about what’s bothering them. it’s the least she could do for Arthur, after everything he’s done for her. she has no hesitation in calling him her best friend, so of course she wants to help him in any way she can. it makes her chest ache to see him this way-- so torn apart and conflicted within himself.

“why do you feel wrong, Arthur? i know you hate it when anyone says this, but you’re the best goddamn man i know.  nothin’ you say is going to make me change my mind, believe me,” she says softly, even though everyone else in the camp is asleep or trying to fall asleep in their tents. firmly, she squeezes Arthur’s hand, gaze sympathetic and patient.
