Facial Pain, also known as Trigeminal Neuralgia is a condition of chronic facial pain that is sudden and intense. It often feels like a sharp, severe pain to the face and is usually unexpected. Each session lasts from a few seconds to up to 2 minutes. Sometimes, this condition can disappear completely for long periods of time without resurfacing until much later.

What Causes Head & Face Pain?
Pain, simultaneously in head and face can be sharp, severe sudden like electric shock sensation. It is due to ‘Trigeminal neuralgia’. Caused due to irritation of fifth Cranial nerve near brain storm. It can be due to tumor or vessel loop compressinary nerve. Surgery (MVD) is a good option if Medicines fail to cure it. www.rgbrainspinesurgeon.com
A pain a day
I thought I’d try and explain some of the Facial pains that are out there minus all the difficult terminology! If it’s too dumbed down let me know and I can make it more technical for anyone who wants it! I’ll try and do one a day if time allows! So hear goes!
I decided to start with Trigeminal Neuralgia as that’s one of the nasties!
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a disorder that affects the Trigeminal Nerve. We have different nerves in our faces and the 5th nerve is called the Trigeminal nerve. One way I’ve found of visually discribing it is to splay my hand out like a fan on one side of my face with my thumb on my ear and roughly where my fingers run across my face is where the Trigeminal nerve runs as it has three branches and those branches have little branches like the roots of a tree! The three (hence TRI-geminal) branches go across the forehead which branches off into the nose and eye, another that branches across the cheek and upper jaw and the third which affects the lower jaw and tongue.
What seems to happen is that communication wires with the brain have got confused. Some theories are that there is a blood vessel pressing on the nerve, if it is and they can find it then it’s good news as it can be fixed, generally but not in all cases 🙁 In a lot of cases no cause is ever found.
The messages that get through are very painful ones! They can be described as electric shock like, sharp, shooting, stabbing, burning, deep ache. They can last for seconds or for longer periods. Nearly always they are only on one side of the face!
Anything can set off an attack! Talking, brushing your teeth, rain, the shower, a light breeze, air conditioners, eating, light touch, a kiss on the cheek.
The pain can be so severe that it is completely disabling.
The worst thing with this condition is that it causes fear! Fear of not knowing when the next attack will come! It can be completely random and the patient can go into remission and not have an attack for days, weeks, months or years then Wham! Out of the blue it gets you again! It is known as ‘The World’s worse pain’ also known as ‘The Suicide disease’ . For most people though it can be managed on medication or using other treatments such as surgery or Gamma knife surgery, radio frequency, glycerol injections and various other treatments. Some people find Accupuncture helpful and meditation. During a bad attack if it involves the branch going to your teeth your dentist can help by giving you an anaesthetic injection.
A lot of people with TN (Trigeminal Neuralgia) have trigger zones which when touched will set off an attack! Most people with TN won’t let anyone near their face!
As an aside, one of the biggest problems is people kissing your cheek when they say ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’ it can be seen as rude if you don’t lean in but I think I’d prefer to be seen as rude than to deliberately set off an attack 😱
The main thing is, if you have an attack, STAY CALM if you get worked up and tense yourself up it will get worse. I know it’s easy to say keep calm when it feels like someone is attacking your face with a kitchen knife or with 20,000 volts of electricity but just try to breathe, slowly is best. In through your nose out through your mouth. Close your eyes and try to sink into it. Relax your shoulders. Obviously, it depends on where you are, you can’t always just drop everything and try to do a mini meditation session! But staying calm does help. It’s also helpful to have someone with you that knows your condition. If need be they can get you to a quiet place or screen you from onlookers that think you’re having a funny turn!
Important thing is: Try not to let it get you down! Easier said than done but distraction is good! Staying stress free is good! Find an interest that can take you out of yourself like painting, writing, get a pet. I know these sound trivial but they do help!
So, if you have any questions that I can answer, I will otherwise I’ll point you to where someone can answer it, if I can!
I hope the above has made sense! I’m not an expert and don’t claim to be but I found this info helpful and thought I’d pass it on 😊
Speak to you all soon xxx
