Frank Zappa / The Mothers of Invention - Inca Roads (Live at The Roxy, 1973) I really love the playful crooning in the song’s intro, and how he cracks himself up at one point. Also damn I could listen to the part at 3:17 all day. The synth/organist is George Duke, so I spent some time going through his catalog, and his album Faces In Reflection has a similar vibe.

A Song A Day #94 - George Duke was a regular Zappa/Mothers of Invention sideman from 1970 through the mid-80s. As a solo artist Duke was a leader in the world of jazz fusion. North Beach is featured on Duke’s Faces in Reflection (1974). This forward-thinking synth workout is an excellent example of Proto-Techno. For a time, Derrick May, one of Techno’s main originators along with Juan Atkins and Kevin Sanderson, opened all of his DJ sets with this track. I’m sure it never felt out of place for it really was well ahead of its time.

i'm don't have anything to add to george duke passing this week, except to say that it made me reach for my favorite album of his, 'faces in reflection'.

some of this would fall into some people's idea of 70's jazz wank, but i think a lot of it is really tight & funky-this fits into the era where he was playing with frank zappa & fusion was big, so you get some of those sorts of tracks, but with a real soul-infused take on it, which is all you need to know about his playing.

then you get tracks like 'capricorn', a downtempo track where all the parts breathe-it feels loose but it's sharp and rooted in soulful playing in a way that's pretty accessible to people who don't like jazz.

there's also some really spacy shit on here (like 'north shore', which shows you some of his chops on a wah-wahed rhodes & chirpy moog), but on almost every track i find something interesting. it's a gem.

he got tagged later on as smooth jazz, which i think is appropriate. but to neglect what role he played in so many different aspects of modern music is a real disservice.

i mean, what would christopher penn have learned to dance to in 'footloose' were it not for george duke?
