A Song A Day #41 - This buried Paul McCartney treasure is completely out of leftfield. Secret Friend is a b-side to the single Temporary Secretary from McCartney II (1980). It sounds like it came out of the ambient house scene from the early nineties. This could easily be played in a DJ's set without anyone having a clue that is produced by a former Beatle.
Surprisingly, McCartney cut quite a few oddball cuts throughout his career. The sessions for McCartney II alone include three proto-electronica tracks. Temporary Secretary, a slice of electro-pop with a strong proto-techno feel to it, was the only one to appear on the album. The other b-side was Check My Machine. Waterfalls was its a-side.
It turns out that McCartney was one of the first bedroom producers around. This was the first track he worked on for the album and he recorded it at home.
