Duckling Blog 2017 Week 1
Duckling Blog
Welcome to the first week of this summer’s “Ducking Blog” where the Counselors in Training write about the adventures here at BAX. We’re the first ducklings of this summer: Aurora Donohue (12 years old) and Sachie Hara (13 years old). So far this week we have done tasks such as; wash the dishes, help with snack, fold and put away lunches and towels, buy snack, and our favorite part of all, working with the campers! Wednesday, we saw some awesome hairdos from the BAX campers and staff. This week is “Beach Blanket Bingo” for the Nanos (5-6 years old) and “Tumble Moves” for the Gigas (7-8 years old) & Megas (9-11 years old).
NANOS
The Nanos are making a splash with this week’s “Beach Blanket Bingo” theme. Their visual art specialist, Ben Weber, has been working with them to create amazing art, including making imaginary flavors of ice cream with patterned paper. Other specialists helped the Nanos create sea-themed performances. The group leader, Amanda Fahey, and other wonderful counselors did other projects with the Nanos, such as an experiment to reflect on oil spills in the ocean. Thursday, the Nanos showed off their beach artwork and performance to their parents or other family. It’s all fun and games with the Nanos, whether the staff needs to capture their attention with a quick game, or if there’s just spare time for some excitement.
MEGAS
This week the Mega and Giga theme was Tumbling Moves. In the Mega room, there were mats for this purpose. Although the Megas weren’t in this room all the time (they switched rooms with the Gigas), the Mega room was often very quiet. They seemed like a very peaceful group, but they still had tons of great ideas. Among other activities, they made butterfly pictures and wrote stories to go together with their counselors and group leader, Sydney Shepard. They have also worked with specialists to create art, work on dances, and do other fun activities.
GIGAS
Along with practicing tumbling, the Gigas have made interesting artwork, like making model animal habitats with cardboard and markers. In the Giga room, there are sections separated by tape, which usually are for different games or activities. We have seen the Gigas enjoy hula hoops, board games, art activities, and more in these sections. The Gigas also have worked in pods, which are groups of campers often told to meet together, to come up with ideas or create something special to their pod. The Gigas aren’t afraid to share their ideas.
We hope that everyone has a great summer vacation, and that we will see some friendly faces again during the other weeks. Signing off,
Counselors in Training: Aurora Donohue and Sachie Hara😋

FACES OF BAX | Susan Cline Lucey
When was I at BAX? Yikes, it's hard to remember! I took over Jessie's classes when she was having her 2nd baby, and then stayed on as the beginner DPW's director. So was that....1998??!!!! I taught at BAX with the advanced DPW/YPPW until I left Brooklyn in 2004 (in addition to teaching yoga to kids and adults, and I taught the 3 year old dance classes for a few years in there too) and then I think Helen took the performance workshops over for me when I left. Yes, 6 years that felt like some of the most important years of my life. Taught Sarah, Michelle, Brianna, Lee, Rachel, Nadia, Jenna ..... and of course so many more. I grew into an adult teaching these young people, and learned what it meant to truly TEACH from the heart with community in mind, boy did I love those kids.
Fast forward -- I now live in Burlington, Vermont with my husband Mark and 3 sons: Emmett (age 11), Zinn (age 8) and Jay (age 2 1/2). I am the owner of Evolution Prenatal & Family Yoga Center, a yoga studio that specializes in prenatal/postnatal yoga, pregnancy support through childbirth education classes and doula (labor support) services, and children's yoga from baby to teen. I spend my days teaching yoga, attending births, meeting with couples for birth classes, and doing little down dogs with babies.
Love you all!!!
Susan
