Hello, if the skin on the side of a person's face were to be sliced off permanently, exposing their teeth, gums, and mouth to the elements, what long and short-term consequences would there be? I imagine chewing and drinking would have to be done very carefully, or the food/drink would fall out the side. And I suspect saliva would constantly be leaking out of that side of their mouth, but would there be anything else?

Honestly, if this person doesn't get a serious skin graft situation going, this could very well be fatal in the first week or two.

One of the skin's very important functions is to protect the underlying tissue from bacteria. With that compromised, it's highly likely this person would experience a lot of pain, and a number of infections on the ring of damaged tissue surrounding the wound.

So this person either gets a nasty infection right away or just is chronically infected in that part of their face.

In terms of food and drink -- well, try it. Pretend one of your cheeks is gone and if food or drink sloshes that way, it will fall out of your mouth. How would you eat?

Would you tilt your head back to drink? Or to the side? (Either way could feel really unpleasant with the scar formation.)

Chronic exposure to air is REALLY bad for teeth (and can cause neural pain -- the kind like really bad cold sensitivity with a cavity) -- so if this person survives for any significant length of time, it's likely to cause a lot of painful tooth decay and chronic dry mouth (after all, their saliva would eventually just evaporate and their tongue would dry out). I would imagine they're chronically thirsty.

Also, ask yourself how much happened in the way of muscle damage. Were the muscles of the jaw affected? Can they even chew? If not, how are they getting nutrition? Smoothies? A tube directly into the stomach (PEG tube)?

And, most importantly of all: how does your character respond to their new face? Are they actively seeking things like skin grafts or facial transplantation to help them function?
