*********
His mama had always said that humans were a little weird, and in all honesty, he can't really disagree.
None of them can see their kind, though some individuals seem to be able to sense their presence. However, it could very well just be guesswork and luck for all he knows. Whatever the case may be, he has learned all the different names humans have given them over the years, from spirits to ghosts, and even gods. His favorite however, has to be the fae. Fairy sounds a bit too childish for his tastes, but fae has a nice ring to it.
When his mama was still around, he had asked her why their kind always tend to end up bonded with humans, especially given their general lack of awareness for beings of their realm. She had said that for as weird and nasty as humans can be, she had always believed that their kind, the fae, were born from human kindness and hope. To bring a little more light into the limbo between the living and the dead, or so she said.
He never got to ask her more though, for she faded not long after that, just a few seasons after her human passed, and while he doesn't know what happens to them when they fade, but it's of little consequence to him. He, like every other fae, isn't particularly attached to existence.
That's not to say he doesn't enjoy existing though. While he likes to flutter around and help his human any way he can, he especially loves helping his silly human get more in touch with the natural world and takes absolute credit for her newfound plant obsession. This summer has been a tough one, but under his guidance, her garden seems to be holding up alright.
"There you go, miss strawberry, you and your sisters will be just fine. I'll be sure to ask my friend to help keep the birds off you gals." He whistles, looking up into the clouds as his human tends to the flowers on the other side of the garden, and waits for his tiny friend to appear. His friend has taken a liking to creatures of the sky and until she's old enough to find a human, he can count on her to help with his human's garden.
"Riri at your service! Are the birdies bothering you again? Oh gosh, I'm so sorry, you know how they're easily distracted, especially when our strawberry friends are growing up nice and plump!"
"Are you calling the ladies fat? Oh, they'll be pleased to hear that."
Riri is only half his size and he's barely the size of his human's hand, but between giggles, he gets her to help him check the nutrient of the soil and when his humans goes to take a writing break in the shade, Riri cleans his wings and fills him in on the latest gossip.
"Papa's human turned nine yesterday and he's sooooooo nice. I swear he looked straight at me and smiled! I think he even tried to give papa cake. Maybe he's one of the special ones!"
"Ya?" He doesn't actually believe it and rather enjoys his incognito life with his human, but his friend is free to believe what she wants. "My human writes about monsters and spirits all the time, but I'm pretty sure she can't see me."
"Awww, but wouldn't it be cool if she could?"
He shrugs with a smile and gives his wings a shake, turning around to return the favour for Riri. No one he's ever known can feel the prick of ice or the burning of fire, but he likes to think that he can feel the heat of the sun sometimes. "I guess? It's nice like this though. Trust me. It's nice, just like this."
He looks over at his human in question and laughs under his breath at the little furrow in her brow as she scrawls in her notebook. "You'll understand when you find your human, don't worry."
