Chapter 28 in Heir of Fire is giving this scene vibes
The Dreamwalkers
This set of powers originates with the dragons, specifically Latch and his children. Latch’s power entails aiding in dreams, reading dreams, and helping others to sleep. In many ways, he is comparable to the Sandman. As a part of this set of powers he has empathy -- the ability to feel the emotions of others.
His children with Chloe have evolved forms of Latch’s powers. Chloe’s powers of abundance increased the strength of Latch’s powers in varying ways between the three Stuart kids. All of them maintain empathy, telepathy, and the ability to bring about sleep in others. They also have a strong connection to the natural elements thanks to their parents, specifically their mother. The Stuart kids were among the first sets of dragon offspring, so for a time, the true strength of their powers was unknown.
Jensen
He is the eldest of Latch and Chloe’s children. Jensen was born with power over memories. He remembers everything he sees, reads, smells. It can become a burden for him, making it difficult to sort out his memories from those of others. It wasn’t until his twin siblings were born and grew up that he came to understand the reasoning behind his powers. The twins would use Jensen’s knowledge of other’s memories to help build dream worlds for the other dragons to slumber in when they needed rest. Jensen’s knowledge would help the twins create scenarios of others to work through problems and past pain.
Kelly and Cordie
The difference in Kelly’s powers from his siblings is that his ability leans more towards darker memories and nightmares. He can induce delusions upon touch, should he wish, often pulling people into a fitful sleep. If a dream world is created, he is often doing it with his twin, Cordie. They are a balance for each other. Cordie’s power is dream and reverie based, allowing her to create peaceful environments to promote restful sleep.
Kelly and Cordie’s dream worlds come at a price to themselves. Often, they will come out with injuries linked to their power being drained. It is why they only use their own mind as the host, or server, for the dream world if no other option is available. In most cases, that set up the dream world in the dreamer’s own mind, but sometimes, the dreamer isn’t strong enough. It’s with this power that they have helped more than one of the dragons find peace while healing from dangerous and life threatening injury. It is also a power that has nearly killed them both more than once.
In the fae
This power rarely shows up among the fae. When it does, it is coveted. Usually, there is mesmer blood somewhere in the family line. Two of the most well known dreamwalkers are Colum Watson and Rei Cassidy. Both have been hunted, and Colum’s sister, Astoria, has done a lot to keep her brother safe. Rei turned herself into Lucien to protect her cousin’s from the mesmer’s rage.
The fae dreamwalkers do not have nearly the power as the Stuart siblings. They can influence dreams and sleep, but they can not create elaborate dreams or nightmares. Their powers are more telepathically based, which makes them scary in their own right if you were to cross one of them.
Glamours
This is a power that is shared among all the fae. It has it’s origin in the dragons connection to the fae magic. This ability allows for the minor changes to appearance, such as eye and hair color. There can also be minor changes to facial structure, but in general, glamouring does not allow for major physical appearance change.
It takes some energy to maintain these glamours, but it is a small amount compared to the other abilities they hold. From the outside, it is impossible to tell if a glamour is on unless you know better. There are times that emotion could provoke a change in hair or eye color, which would only be noticed if the other person watched the change happen.
There are some types of fae and dragons that can maintain more completely glamours, even to the extent of taking on the full appearance of someone else. One example of this is the powers that the mimics hold, but in that case, this is their base power, such as a water nymph controls water.
The Furies
These were the fae with powers that allowed them to be the punishment force for the entirety of fae kind. Typically, these fae were female - always coming in sibling groupings for two or more. It would be these bonds that would help the furies maintain their control. While their powers were their own, together, they could keep each other level emotionally. The trust that a fury had with her sisters was renowned, and there was little that could break that bond, short of death.
Female furies were highly treasured, but in rare cases, a fury would give birth to a male child. It was seen as unnatural after ages of only having female children. Some people instantly shunned the male children, while others were curious about how their powers would vary to their sisters. These are a few of the reasons that male furies, if they survived infancy, were still seen as a danger. Many grew up without the reassurance of their siblings, and often, their sisters were never told of their brother’s birth.
Common Powers:
Ability to provoke madness in their targets
Eyes turning red
Ability to sense/project anger
Ability to tell if someone is lying
Natural fighting ability
Typically female
Rare Powers:
Naturally skilled in weapon making
Born Male (This was seen as unnatural by many)
Ability to amplify a person’s anger
Headcanon - What are Wil’s Powers?
I’ve decided to make a small breakdown list of things Wil ‘can’ or ‘has’ done with or without his knowing in regards to Fae Powers or abilities. I have realized I have nothing really concrete on my blog about this.
It is important to remember that Wil’s father is a Dream Fae. So, anything Wil does actually stems off of that idea - dream, imagination, creativity. He is an air element like his father.
The difference is his method of utilizing dream and imagination is through his art, drawings, or things he writes down, and scribbles. He can bring dream to life. Things he imagines can come to be. He just uses his art as he medium of focus, but without fully knowing it. (Although, he’s catching on.)
Things he’s done so far:
Transported other people accidentally to other realms of his mind/imagination, or places bordering the veil between worlds.
accidentally or not so accidentally causing the disfigurement of three boys into living mangled forms within trees.
Visiting friends within their dreams.
Brought things from his dreams into the real world. (he caused harm to himself while dreaming, and woke to find the mark still there.)
Has created on purpose a doorway to travel between the Otherworld and the Earth World with a drawing. (He doesn't’ remember doing it now tho)
He doesn’t know this (thinking it coincidence), but he has created small breezes around him during some moods.
He can ‘see’ things about people through his drawings - because he is channeling and tapping into their energies - thoughts in their subconscious mind - which ties in with being able to access people’s dreams which are part of the subconscious mind.
Can he do other things? His abilities are untapped and raw and he doesn’t understand them, so it’s possible, yes. Just think how his powers work, and that helps explain what he might be able to do.
