the orange hue of the sun cresting over the staghorns peaks illuminated the grand dining room , evening breezes of the settling spring floating through the enlarged windows lining the walls behind where the king and queen of terrasen sat.      ❛   i’d say it’s been close to two years now   . . .   ❜      aelin’s voice blooms from the warm hum of the otherwise quiet meal shared between herself and her mate.      eyes holding that of a mischievous gaze lock onto that of his.      ❛   you know , since you called me a coward and that i would be   . . .   how’d you put it , better off dead ?  ❜

“   i’m pretty sure if you shifted right now , you would take the form of a mother hen instead of a hawk.   ”      unrequited and unbreakable joy illuminated aelin’s features as she stared at the sight before her.      the man whom she loved holding the child both loved beyond any measurement.      a better world.      that was the promise , the driving force , of all they had withstood through even the bleakest of times.      it was for this moment , that life , proof of a future that once seemed so far away.

rising in the bed , sun from the early morning cascading the royal suite in colors of oranges and amber , aelin cannot move the smile that has yet to leave her expression since she first heard that small cry.      nor do waking eyes miss the subtle shades of purple growing under her husbands.      “   did you stay up all night with her ?   ”      maybe mother hen was putting it too lightly.      “   again ?   ”

there is no ignoring the flooding taste of metallic gore that fills her mouth , nor the ache spreading across her jaw. looking upwards at the white haired warrior standing over her , there is no understanding in the glare she shoots back. how any of this equated to her gaining an audience with her own aunt still made no sense to the assassin. the constant need to shift , to show her powers — 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒂𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏. even the mental mention of that name rakes down her spine , near causing bile to meet blood behind snarling teeth.

“   great fae warrior my ass.   ” celaena mutters more so to herself even if it is loud enough for him to hear. spit tinged red shoots towards his foot as it takes all her remaining strength to rise to her feet. “   and what exactly is in this for you ? maeve have your manhood in her claws ?   ”

she didn't speak. did not walk with swagger. known for flame , yet her movements were cold. the trek to their lodgings within the extravagant home were silent. even as the heavy door closed them off to the rest of the cadre , not a word fell from straightened lips. all she had done , all she had endured . . . memories caused unseen scars to crawl against her back. had all they'd done , all the sacrifice given , had it even been worth it if they were right back to where they had been all those years prior. if not worse ?

standing unmoving , eyes cast over the bedroom donned in the finest furnatings and cloths , and yet none of it registered. no beauty of these lands could penetrate the roar that consumed her mind. even the words finally uttered proved hollow towards her husband. “   it was all for nothing.   ”

LP STOP I'M GONNA START BAWLING IN A SECOND. first of all though , i rejoined this fandom to befriend you ( hopefully ) and everyone else in the fandom because you guys have been here forever and i just remember how much fun it was to talk with you. i'm really so so honored that you have anything to say about my manon because i know you love her just as fiercely. rowan is in such good hands with you writing him too. i can hear his voice perfectly. i look forward to seeing your threads with mal too ofc. you guys have made this so magical for me again being on tumblr. *sniffles* THANK YOU.

it was a scream that shook even the furthest peaks of the staghorns.      a shrill cry into the void by which even the banished gods themselves quaked from.      beholding the empty bed , the ways in which the shadows of falling rain danced over the tattered sheets , it was the sole sound aelin could make in that moment.      for it was as if she had been thrown back to that horrific night over a decade prior.      only she was now marion lochan   . . .   beholding witness to a sight no soul dared to see.      rather than the gore of blood shrouding two bodies , it was the vacant child’s bed. 

flames of the deepest , hottest embers encased her hands as she ran forth into the child’s bedroom.      wasting no second on turning any and every bit of furniture upside down , tossing clothing and toys this way and that in hopes it was a fools sight.      that somewhere her daughter was simply hiding from the passing spring storm.      but with each toss of a desk or emptying of a wardrobe , the truth only sunk deeper into aelin’s core.      her daughter   ——    her whole world   ——   was gone.      with that , a howl of a raged mother sounded over all of erilea.

❛   stop fussing.   ❜      commanding tones only blanketed the small bit of joyus tinge within aelin’s voice as she struck the delicate needle once more with the mallet.      ink of the darkest night contrasting against his tanned skin began to take shape on her mate's back.      a webbing of her own design melded in with the images he had asked her to finish.      sharing a bed , seeing each other nude   ——   it was nothing to compare to the intimacy of this.      as if their own ways of marking visually for all the world to know she was his and he was hers.      two souls bonded by the deepest tether.      ( not that they needed a physical marking on their bodies to proclaim as such. )

striking down once more , the final markings weaving the final pieces into one , a calm light shone in her eyes as she looked at the work with one final stroke of the mallet.      instruments rattled as she set them aside , using the stained cloth to wipe away the blood from her canvas.  ❛   you know , i think if i ever get tired of being queen , i could make a good living tattooing.   ❜
