Was it a Date?

I've become pretty good friends with this guy I worked with over the summer, and we've hung out every time I've come home from school.  Last night he asked me to go to dinner and a movie, which sounded like a date, so I dressed up a little bit.  It felt like a date the whole time...we split a dessert, he paid, we sat really close to each other during the movie (However there was no hand-holding or strategic arm placement)...then we hugged goodnight.  HUGGED.  Granted, it was a very nice hug, and there was some lingering finger-brushing, but no goodnight kiss.  So, was it a date or was it just two friends hanging out?  :-/
