Poach & Pay: The Real Cost of Poaching (and Why Deer Hunters Should Care)
Poaching isn’t hunting. It’s theft of a public wildlife resource — and it hurts the animals on the landscape, the conservation dollars that manage them, and the reputation of lawful hunters who do things the right way. An Overview of Fair Chase and Hunting Ethics
The president, principal, and owner Viking Real Estate Group, Tom Velken established the Lafayette, California, business in 1995. Away from work, Tom Velken enjoys spending time outdoors. One of his many outdoor areas of interest is hunting wild boar. However, he only engages in ethical, fair chase hunts. In the hunting world, the phrase “fair chase” is an expression and philosophy used to describe a situation in which the hunter and his or her prey are evenly matched. As a matter of ethics, the interpretation of fair chase varies from hunter to hunter. However, fair chase practices emphasize a balance between the hunter’s skill and equipment and the animal’s ability and opportunity to evade the hunter. The development of a personal code of ethics is paramount to every hunter’s journey. At the bare minimum, a hunter is expected to follow all laws and strictures set forth by governing game and wildlife authorities. Beyond this, ethical hunters are expected to respect their prey and the natural environments in which they exist. Understanding the difference between a fair and unfair hunt is an important element of this moral code. The concept of fair chase was officially established by Theodore Roosevelt and the Boone and Crockett Club.
