Faerie Biology, Section 3; Thematic Genetics
Faeries are beings of story, and have no true generics. Their forms and features are determined by their themes and the stories relevant to them.
This means when Fae mate, instead of mixing genes, they create a combination of their thematic elements.
For example, a koi mermaid and a hermit crab earth spirit may create a frog-like mud Faerie.
A frog is not the midpoint of a koi fish and a hermit crab, but mud and the frog are an effective midpoint for the mermaid's and spirit's themes of earth and water.
Finer details, such as skin tone, eye color, or hair color, can change wildly. However, these details are often simply inherited from the parent Fae.
Within many Faerie species, these finer details change very little.
Because any two Fae can mate, the Faerie species are mainly separated by social differences. Their thematic nature influences much of their outlook and behavior.
While not usually enforced, these differences often keep species separate.
